Bumps in the road

I started off going a Mile a Minute, just like the pattern says, but somewhere along the line I started to hit some bumps in the road.
I started off piecing mindlessly, barely paying attention to color and pattern; value & hue were far from my mind. I was going and going, it was awesome.
Some of the blocks started to come out really cool. I wanted them to be random but still some of them started to take on a certain "feel." I started playing around with alternating block fabrics, and color palettes for the non-scrap blocks. Things were still taking shape, but that's when things began to get a little rocky.
Plain spacer blocks weren't enough. It didn't give the eye anywhere to rest or any direction to move. I decided to make color-themed mile-a-minutes and use them as cloth from which to piece traditional blocks. I really like how this turned out.
Then I didn't know how to incorporate all of the multi-colored blocks, but with the use of some strong border/sashing fabric, I think I know where this is headed. Now let's just see if I can get there.
