3/4 done

Helen gave me the stern advice that I should never "show" (meaning show and tell, i guess) a quilt until it's finished. I believe in what she said-- it's much more impressive to see a finished project, and I'm impressed with the quilters out there that can keep to this rule, but real life and the internet are different, right? I won't "show" this quilt to the guild until it's done, but the purpose of my blog is to document my life and experience as a quilter. Sure, it's nice to feel popular and see that people are reading my blog, and I do post pictures to share my work with others, but now i feel torn. Should I hide my big quilt projects from you (whoever you are, assuming you're out there) too, until they're done? Then I won't have anything to blog about.
eh. so i'll break the rule. here are my winding ways blocks all layed out on my "design floor" (haha, i really need to get a design wall, but don't quite know how to do that yet):
3/4 done

This dilemma leads me to another issue though.. I haven't been quiet about being part of an online quilting community when I talk to the other women in the quilt guild, but I'm still feeling pretty strongly that I don't want to share my blog address with them. As it is, less than 5 real life people know about it, and I'm ok with that. I feel torn, having to separate my life like this. Maybe things will work themself out over time.

I think that process is an important part of the whole. I like to see others' quilts, knitting, whatever in progress. It's inspiring and instructive. Keep posting those UFOs!

the whole purpose of blogging for me is to document the process and progress of what I do ... and to read the same on others blogs. I don't need pretensious waffle . I read blogs to see what people are DOING and WHY.
and i'm with you ...I rarely ever show part done work at quilt group and for the same reason.

I don't show unfinished work at guild meetings mainly because it would be a royal pain to transport all those parts. Besides, it's nice to have that "Tada!" moment. Blogs, however, are a different animal. If the primary purpose of your blog is, like mine, to be a journal, then the process is equally, if not more, important than the end product. Letting the two worlds interact is wholly personal. Slowly, my "real world" is catching onto my "blog world" and it's kind of fun. The blog has become a great way to share photos when we all can't go to a show or fest together.

I think it's important to show your progress up on the blog as you say it's a journal and quite different from what the guild meetings are for. As for not letting the two meet I am just the same. I have told my two sisters and that is it. I don't want anyone around here or my freinds knowing that I have a blog - I don't know why I just don't.

You can use a big piece of polarfleece as a "designwall"; I've had a piece pushpinned to my wall with fabric squares stuck to it for the last few months, while waiting for the time to work further on the project. The fabric sticks to the fleece just like a childs felt and flannel board, and you can move the fabric bits around easily to try different arrangements.
