August 12th

One thing about dial-up that I had forgotten is that once a page is loaded, you can read the entire thing, even if you lose your connection. It happened to me the other day when I was viewing my blog, trying to get some information (probably trying to find a link to your blogs so I could see what y'all have been up to all summer), and I found myself with no internet and someone already on the phone. I had the chance to read my last 12 posts or so and it was so strange. How quickly life changes.

I read about my anxieties of coming to Greece, the things I wanted, the things I worried about. And now, it's different, it doesn't matter. Here I am not worrying about any of those things. Living in the moment, whether I want to or not. This house has become a home to me. I am no longer constantly on edge.
I've spend a lot of time on my own this past week as Costas has run around on various errands (don't ask him about canceling a credit card here; it literally took two days). I finished another good book, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, and I've been making a lot of progress on the diamond stars. Here's what it looked like in the middle of June, when I first got here, the first trip:

I was surprised when i saw this pic this morning. Now I've got the edges all smoothed out and only 4 stars left to go in the bottom row. Putting the side and bottom borders on will require some forethought and an ironing board, I don't know when I'll have time to get to that.
Today we've got the house to ourselves, no plans. Costas is rooting through his brother's record collection, playing me songs from his youth. It's kind of like being at home. I miss his guitar though.

Your quilt is beautiful. So nice to hear you are feeling more at home and relaxed in your husbands homeland.

It's been a bad year for you. Glad you are able to enjoy some peaceful days at last.

"The Handmaid's Tale"--that remains one of the scariest and most thought-provoking books I've ever read. I MADE both my kids read it.

I reread The Handmaid's Tale again a year or so ago. Still totally brilliant, plausible and yes I'd agree with Kathy's thought provoking and scary as well.

Your quilt is gorgeous. I'm sure you'll look back at it and remember this crazy summer, full of travel and sorrow. Hopefully you are able to enjoy that beautiful beach while you are there and find solace in your lovely family.
